Stories from the Field with English Language Programs: Musical Crossroads

As an English Language Fellow with the U.S. Department of State, I had the honor to present and perform at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, as well as the U.S. Consulate's American Center in Ho Chi Minh City (Hanoi), Vietnam. My presentation Musical Crossroads: Exploring Language, History, and Culture through Music in the U.S. not only entertains but also educates the audience and models how they can reflect and share on the intersections of culture, society, identity, and music. I was invited by English Language Programs to share my story about how we can honor the roots of culture while continuing to create and express ourselves in new and exciting ways. NEF-tesol

I was honored to deliver the keynote at the North East TESOL conference, presenting on Humanizing Education: Language Learning, Cultural Reflection, and Storytelling. This interactive presentation briefs audience members on current and relevant SLA research, as well as engages them in the reflection and sharing of identities through storytelling, our most ancient form of expression, teaching, and learning. Resources for using storytelling in the classroom are provided, as well as diverse cultural perspectives on storytelling for intercultural exchange. Closing the presentation, I present and play the Aboriginal Australian didgeridoo to illustrate multimodal aspects of storytelling and provide an unforgettable experience.

The maharajah flamenco trio

Musical education has the powerful potential to improve scholastic achievement, pride in our diverse identities, promote well-being, and inspire individuals to create. I am able to do this through my performances with the Maharajah Flamenco Trio (MFT) and provide impactful and fun edutainment experiences for all age groups. Click here to watch the MFT perform for the wonderful students at Weaver Academy in Greensboro, North Carolina. Click here to visit the MFT website.
